Noren takes Nordea Masters with ease
Hometown favorite Alex Noren cruised to victory in the Nordea Masters, winning by seven shots at Bro Hof Slott in Stockholm.
Noren’s final-round 77 was hardly a thing of beauty, but he began the day 11 shots clear thanks to a brilliant 63 in round three. The win was his second this season, following the Saab Wales Open, and moved the 29-year-old to No. 70 in the World Golf Ranking.
England’s Richard Finch finished second, vaulting up the leaderboard with a Sunday 69 – the only under-par round on an unusually windy day. Sweden’s Niclas Lemke took solo third on 5-under while Americans Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson tied sixth.
While Noren’s final round was forgettable, his first three days were anything but. Noren jumped out of the gate with a 67 followed by 66, then left the field in his wake on Saturday. His 63 included seven birdies and an eagle and gave him a 20-under total.
Noren became the fifth Swede to win the Nordea Masters, joining countrymen Jesper Parnevik (1995, 1998), Joakim Haeggman (1997), Peter Hanson (2008) and Richard S. Johnson (2010).
“It’s even more amazing (winning) at home,” Noren said, “everyone cheering you on… You don’t really feel that anywhere else.”
Watson had eased into second on -9 before skying to 78 on Sunday. Johnson, a week removed from a second-place tie in the Open Championship, was steady en route to a -3 tally. Australia’s Scott Hend and Spain’s Pablo Martin finished a shot better than the Americans, tying fourth on 4-under.
