Three out of four ain’t bad.

Then again, three solid rounds weren’t enough to earn Tiger Woods a victory at the Australian Open. Leading through two rounds, Woods stumbled to a 75 on Saturday, opening the door for Aussie Greg Chalmers to claim the title. Woods roared back into contention with a Sunday 67, but fell two shots shy to finish third.

Greg Chalmers Australian OpenSearching for his first win since the 2009 Australian Masters, Woods opened with scores of 68-67 to take the halfway lead at The Lakes Golf Club. An erratic third round, however, left him six shots off the pace set by Australia’s John Senden.

With the crowd focused on Tiger’s comeback, Chalmers grabbed the spotlight. His steady 69 included a pair of back-nine birdies, pushing the left-hander ahead of Woods and Senden, who managed an even-par 72 for solo second.

Chalmers walked away with the Stonehaven Cup for the second time in his career, having first hoisted it in 1998. This time, he said, was sweeter. “I think I stumbled into it when I was 26,” Chalmers joked. “I had no idea how big a deal it was then, but I know more now.”

Four Aussies – Geoff Ogilvy, Adam Scott, Jason Day and Nick O’Hern – joined American Nick Watney in a tie for fourth.

Golf’s eyes will remain focused Down Under this week as the Presidents Cup pits 12-man squads from the U.S. and International ranks at storied Royal Melbourne GC.
