Kenneth Ferrie emerged victorious from an all-England playoff at the Austrian GolfOpen, defeating Simon Wakefield on the first hole of sudden death.
The win was Ferrie’s first since 2005 and third of his career, which had been stuck in neutral for years. Ferrie ranked 355th in the world entering the Austrian GolfOpen, with a top 2011 finish of eighth at the Johnny Walker Championship.
His triumph didn’t come easy, either. Ferrie and Wakefield matched final-round 67s and 12-under totals at Diamond Country Club, overcoming third-round leader Thomas Norret and challenger Joost Luiten (who missed the playoff with a bogey at the last).
Wakefield, who birdied 18 to reach the playoff, gained the edge by driving the fairway on the same hole while Ferrie found the left rough. Ferrie, however, carved his approach to 6 feet while Wakefield’s second sailed long. Wakefield failed to save par, and Ferrie’s birdie putt gave him a hard-earned victory.
“I feel amazing right now,” Ferrie said. “I haven’t won for six years and I was wondering if it was ever going to happen in the end. To get it done was fantastic.”
Luiten and Norret placed third and fourth, respectively, while Victor Dubuisson, Cesar Monasterio and Bernd Wiesberger tied fifth.
The European Tour visits Scotland for one of the season’s biggest events, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Sept. 29-Oct. 2. Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Dustin Johnson are among those vying for the title.
