Dustin Johnson wins The BarclaysThe first leg of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs turned into a race against the clock – and Hurricane Irene – with Dustin Johnson beating everyone to the finish line. Johnson’s final-round 65 gave him a 19-under-par total, good for a two-shot victory over Matt Kuchar at The Barclays.

The imminent threat of Irene, which ploughed up the East Coast over the weekend, caused Tour officials to shorten The Barclays to 54 holes at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J. Teeing off early Saturday to outrun the wind and rain, the field managed to finish in advance of the worst weather.

Johnson started the third round a shot behind Kuchar, but overcame his playing partner with birdies on the first two holes. Kuchar held his ground, though, and the pair exchanged the lead over the next nine holes. Back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13 proved Kuchar’s undoing.

The win was the first all season for Johnson, runner-up at the Open Championship in July. The young star moved into first place in the FedEx Cup standings, making him the man to beat in the four-event series.

His play impressed Kuchar, last year’s leading money winner on Tour. “Guys like Dustin Johnson can make golf seem really easy,” Kuchar marveled.

The Barclays marked the end of the line for 25 players who failed to advance to this week’s Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston. Among those making the cut were England’s Ian Poulter, who used a final-round 64 to get in, and Ernie Els, whose Saturday 67 moved him into 99th place.
