Thailand victory spurs Westwood toward 2012
Lee Westwood finished off his year in style, running away with a seven-stroke victory in the Thailand Golf Championship. The world’s third-ranked golfer won two of his final three events in 2011, including the Nedbank Challenge in South Africa two weeks prior.
The Englishman controlled this event from the start. Westwood roared out of the gates with a 12-under-par 60 and backed it up with a 64. That was good for an 11-shot lead at the halfway point, though Charl Schwartzel made things interesting with a Saturday 66 to Westwood’s 73.
Not content with a four-shot cushion, Westwood went to work on Sunday with birdies on holes two and three. Schwartzel, the 2011 Masters champion, never mounted a serious challenge as Westwood cruised home on 22-under for the week.
Westwood was delighted with his performance and the momentum it provides for 2012. He’s rejoined the U.S. PGA Tour and hopes to chase down that elusive first major title.
“I’m going to work on my fitness and all aspects of my game,” Westwood said. “I’ll go into the winter with a lot of confidence and I’ll try to come out next year playing the same kind of golf as I played this week, a little bit leaner and well rested.”
American Michael Thompson finished third while England’s Simon Dyson tied fourth with Thailand’s Chawalit Plaphol.
