Bjorn again: Dane claims second straight title
Step aside, Lee and Rory. Take a seat, Mr. Kaymer. Thomas Bjorn is the hottest golfer in Europe.
The 40-year-old Dane overtook three of the game’s brightest stars, along with a bevy of other challengers, with a final-round 62 to win the Omega European Masters in Switzerland. The four-shot victory followed Bjorn’s playoff win at the Johnnie Walker Championship one week before and was his third title this season.
Bjorn started the fourth round three off the lead and stood level par through four holes before reeling off four straight birdies. A closing kick of three birdies and an eagle over Bjorn’s final five holes left Martin Kaymer in his wake. Bjorn finished 20-under for the tournament and earned €333,330.
The 62 was the lowest round of Bjorn’s career and capped an incredible run. “The way I finished was special,” said Bjorn, who credited his wedge play for the sudden burst of success. “It’s been an amazing two weeks.”
Kaymer, the world’s sixth-ranked player, was solo second after a closing 65. One shot further back were Jamie Donaldson of Wales, Jaco Van Zyl of South Africa, and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy – clearly recovered from a wrist injury suffered last month at the PGA Championship.
“Coming back off the injury I didn’t know what to expect,” said McIlroy, who posted rounds of 65-69-67-68. “To get myself into contention was great and the arm felt 100 percent healthy, which is a huge positive.”
Lee Westwood tied sixth on -14.
Up next – the KLM Open in the Netherlands.
