U.S. cruises to Presidents Cup triumph
The United States may find Ryder Cup success elusive, but the Americans have got the Presidents Cup figured out.
The U.S. beat the International squad convincingly in golf’s “other” biennial team matches, the 19-15 final score only partly indicative of America’s dominance. Paced by a resurgent Jim Furyk, the U.S. led from the opening day and was never in danger of losing.
America now boasts a 7-1-1 all-time record in the Presidents Cup, its lone defeat coming in 1998. The U.S. avenged that loss, in a way, by winning these matches on the same course, Australia’s Royal Melbourne.
Furyk posted a 5-0 record, surprising coming off his worst season since he was a PGA Tour rookie. America also got strong play from Hunter Mahan (4-1) and Phil Mickelson (3-1), while Tiger Woods – a controversial captain’s pick by Fred Couples – secured the clinching point in Sunday’s singles and finished 2-3 for the week.
Many observers favored the International squad, whose 12 members included five Australians. Instead, Geoff Ogilvy (3-1-1) was the only Aussie to manage a winning record, while Robert Allenby went 0-4.
The matches return to U.S. soil in 2013, when Jack Nicklaus’ Muirfield Village GC hosts the event.
