Simon DysonRiding a wave of golf he called “probably the best I’ve ever played,” England’s Simon Dyson won the Irish Open by a shot over Richard Green of Australia. The win, worth €250,000 pushed Dyson to ninth place in the Race to Dubai standings.

Green three-putted the final green at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club to hand Dyson the trophy, the fifth of his career. Dyson did plenty to help his own cause, too, making birdies on two of his last three holes for a 67 and 15-under-par total.

Green shared the 54-hole lead with Dyson and David Howell, who faded with a final-round 73. Green remained in first for much of the day, but settled for second when his 60-foot birdie attempt on 18 slid 10 feet past the hole, and he missed the comebacker or par.

“You always feel sorry for somebody when that happens,” Dyson said, “but I will take whatever I can get.”

Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher finished solo third at -12, followed by Bernd Wiesberger of Austria on 11-under. Farther afield came defending champion Ross Fisher (T17), Graeme McDowell (T25) and Rory McIlroy (T34). McIlroy spent a good part of the week embroiled in a spat with TV commentator Jay Townsend, who questioned the course management of McIlroy and caddie J.P. Fitzgerald.

Darren Clarke, playing for the first time since his stirring victory in the Open Championship, missed the cut with rounds of 69-74.
