An emotional Thomas Levet won the Alstom Open de France on Sunday, becoming just the second French winner since 1972. Levet’s steady final round of 70 was good for a one-shot victory over Thorbjørn Olesen and Mark Foster.

Levet tamed the difficult Le Golf National course – recently picked to host the 2018 Ryder Cup – while other contenders faltered. Olesen missed a 3-foot par putt at the last to fall out of a tie with Levet, while Foster struggled to a closing 74 after sharing the third-round lead.

The win was the first of Levet’s season and sixth of his career, and no doubt the most satisfying of them all. With the large galleries solidly in his corner, Levet carded four birdies against three bogies in his final 18. The 42-year-old European Tour mainstay was playing in the Open de France for the 25th time; the last Frenchman to win it was Jean-Francois Remesy in 2004 and ’05.

Adding emotional heft was the health of Levet’s mother, who watched from home while recovering from a lingering illness.

England’s Foster was poised to spoil the storyline after opening with 11 pars to remain on 9-under. A double-bogey at 12, however, was followed by another dropped shot at 13, opening the door for Levet. Englishman James Morris shared the overnight lead with Foster, but tumbled to a tie for seventh with a 78.

Germany’s Martin Kaymer claimed solo fourth with a 280 total, climbing back to No. 3 in the world ranking after slipping a spot last week.
