No one rated Sean O’Hair among the favorites heading into the RBC Canadian Open. Least of all O’Hair himself.

But O’Hair claimed victory in a sudden-death playoff when Kris Blanks missed a bogey putt on the first extra hole. The win turned around an awful season for O’Hair, who had made just seven cuts in 17 previous events.

What’s more, O’Hair labeled his play during Wednesday’s pro-am “horrific,” hardly a sign of the good things to come. Admittedly trying too hard to force the issue, O’Hair decided “to just let it go and whatever happens, happens.”

What happened was a first-round 69 on the rough-choked Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club course in Vancouver, B.C., followed by a 73 and 66. Entering the final round three back of Bo Van Pelt, O’Hair fired a 68 to match Blanks at 4-under for the tourney.

Andres Romero had a chance to join the playoff, but suffered a 72nd-hole bogey that left him a shot astray in third place. Geoff Ogilvy and 23-year-old Canadian Adam Hadwin tied fourth at -2. John Daly earned his first top-10 finish in six seasons, tying for ninth on even par.

In the playoff, O’Hair and Blanks both found rough alongside the 472-yard 18th hole. O’Hair’s approach made the fairway short of the green while Blanks put his into a bunker. O’Hair chipped on and two-putted for bogey, but Blanks’ blast missed the green. He failed to get up-and-down, handing O’Hair an unlikely victory.
