Van Pelt claims big prize at CIMB
It may not count as an official PGA Tour win, but Bo Van Pelt was plenty pleased with his six-shot victory at the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic in Selangor, Malaysia. With a final-round 64, Van Pelt pulled away from challengers including Jeff Overton and Fredrik Jacobson for his first win since 2009.
Official or not, the event (co-sanctioned by the PGA and Asian Tour) drew a solid field featuring Vijay Singh, Brandt Snedeker, Robert Allenby and other stalwarts. Van Pelt bested them all with rounds of 66-64-67-64 for a 23-under-par total at the MINES Resort, good for a $1.3 million prize.
Van Pelt was happy to have a cushion heading down the stretch after missing chances to win earlier this season. “I just wanted to learn from that and do a better job when I had the lead,” Van Pelt said.
He certainly accomplished that. Playing partner Overton, who couldn’t keep pace despite a Sunday 69, called Van Pelt’s closing 64 “one of the best rounds of golf I’ve seen.”
A select group of American, European and international stars will compete in the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai, November 3-6.
Also of note, Ken Duke won the Nationwide Tour Championship to lead 25 players in qualifying for the PGA Tour in 2012. Graduates include Nationwide money leader J.J. Killeen, former amateur phenom Danny Lee, two-time heart transplant recipient Erik Compton, and Billy Hurley III, who served out a military obligation before embarking on a professional career.
